A letter of support sent on 28 August from UIAA President Peter Muir and UIAA CEO André von Rotz to the Nepal Mountaineering Association. This follows news of the floods and landslides which have devastated the Nepal-Tibet border region.

It is with profound sorrow that we, on behalf of the UIAA and its member federations around the world, learned of the devastating floods that have struck Nepal in recent days. The scale of loss of life, the number of people still missing, and the destruction visited upon villages, homes and infrastructure across the affected regions have shaken all of us who hold Nepal, its mountains and its people so close to our hearts.

Nepal is not simply a member of our federation; it is, in many ways, the spiritual home of world mountaineering. In this moment of grief, the UIAA family stands with the Nepal Mountaineering Association, with the families who have lost loved ones, with those still searching for missing relatives and friends, and with every community working to recover from this tragedy.

Please accept our deepest condolences, and please know that our thoughts are with the NMA staff, membership and the wider Nepali people during this extraordinarily difficult time. Should there be any way in which the UIAA or our member federations can offer practical support or solidarity in the weeks ahead, we hope you will not hesitate to let us know.

We look forward to standing alongside you as you rebuild, and to the continued partnership between our organisations in the months to come.
